Love they say is an emotion, some say it's an act, others say it is a decision. And for us as believers, we know love is God. God is the only true representation or definition for love, the AGAPE love.
I mean if I ever found the motivation to love someone, it will be their loyalty and resurgence towards me. It then seems, the other concepts of love themselves base or depend on the foundations of the AGAPE love for survival.

Jesus Christ rightfully said in Matt 22:37 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." And the continuation has to do with loving our neighbours. Matt 22:38 "You shall love your neighbour as yourself".

Now, loving God has to do with your ALL; your being and everything that constitutes your being. Most people display their love for God on basis of desire or emotions.
"I want these people to know I'm a good person", hence he/she will portray a Christ-like character henceforth to win the masses. Loving God goes beyond that.
"I don't feel like going to church today neither do I feel like reading my Bible". Little do we know that a time with God is a time with His word; and loving God has nothing to do with how you feel or what you are going through.
In John 21:16-17, our Lord interviewed Simon Peter (son of Jonas) after his resurrection. Where he said, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?". He used the Greek word "Agapas".
So let's look at some ways to love God.

Some love others because of what they can offer or give them. We will observe 10 ways or steps to love God (a message preached by Evangelist Dag Heward-Mills).

1. Obeying God: Not loving God is doing the opposite or going contrary to His will; what He asks us to do. Love is by deeds and by your actions can you prove you love God; thus, in doing His will or obeying His commandments. John 14:15,21

2. Be close to God: Every strong and well built relationship demands closeness. And one good way to build your relationship with God is through Quiet time. John 14:9;8:19

3. Desire to hear the voice of God: When you love someone you desire to hear their voice. The art of hearing is something that has to be mastered. The best way to know someone is to know them by their voices. Know the voice of God amidst other voices. 1 Kings 19:11-13, Job 23:5

4. Delight yourself in God: Be happy to move with the things of God. Be full of gladness to be in His presence; the gatherings, seeing His goodness amidst storms. Psalm 122:1;37:4, Proverbs 8:32

5. Longing for God: You must have an uncontrollable and persisting desire for God; become a God chaser. Be hungry for God, be filled with rolling thoughts about God. Longing for God means missing God, wishing and yearning continuously to be with Him. Psalm 42:1, 63:1, Phil 3:10

6. Knowing God: We have to enquire about Him; form research modes and means to learn and know more about Him, most of which should be through reading of the Bible. Practically we happen to love only those we know. Not until you know the heart of someone, you don't know them. Hence get to know the heart of God. Acts 13:22, Psalm 27:4.

7. Loving the House of God and the fellowship of the brethren: We must desire to be in the presence of God. We should constantly will to be in church, where God is. We should desire been in church to worship, praise, bless and adore God; to get close to Him. You don't appear late in a meeting with your girlfriend, so why will you go to church late. Psalm 122:1, 63:1

8. Loving what God loves: There are many things God loves; but just to mention are His love us while we were sinners and also His love for the sheep. God receives sinners, He loves sinners and wants to save them. Romans 5:8, Luke 15:1-2 He also loves the sheep, His followers. 1 John 4:8, 5:1-2

9. Loving His word: We need to meditate on the word and instructions of God. It simply means we have to think about the word of God; we need to ponder over the word, we need to get deeper understanding of it and live by it. Psalm 119:97, Joshua 1:8

10. Giving to the house of God: The basis of love is to give; attention, trust, loyalty, affection etc. And we can engage in this act through offerings and tithing. Do not confuse real love with buying love; true love can't be bought because it's priceless. Love requires willingness; giving to support God's work freely and willingly. 2 Cor 8:7, 1 Cor 29:3
